Growth Opportunities

Opportunities for Growth

  • Consumption Growth
The consumption growth over the period 2005 - 2010 is estimated at 2 - 2.5% per annum, i.e. an increase of 5,000 - 10,000 MT of poultry meats. In addition, a greater part of this will be in marketing and value added products.
  • Production Capacity
The meat, feed and egg processing plants of the region all have some surplus capacity to support volume growth in the short to medium term. However between 10 - 15 m USD per annum over 10 yeas will be needed to support efficency gains, to upgrade the housing stock, and processing technology to produce value added products.
  • Backward Integration
There are several opportunities to improve competitiveness and food security through backward integration
    • Feed
It is estimated that are the equivalent of some 25,000 acres of corn in Belize and 24,000 acres of rice in Guyana and Suriname are producing approximately 15% of the regions feed grain requirements. It is felt that there is some opportunity to increase the amount of locally produced feed stuffs.
    • Hatching Eggs
Approximately 20% of the hatching egg requirements of the region are grown locally and another 20% is grown by CPA members in the USA. While the industry has been hesitant to venture into hatching egg production because of the high risk, it is likely that local production of hatching eggs will increase in the medium to long term.

  • Trade
The industry is exploring opportunities to carefully increase regional trade from the current levels of less than 1% of local production, focusing on value added products, and displacing imported primary product.
